Steve Vondette, was a proud member of the Local Union (LU) 46 Executive Board (E-Board), and veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, who authorized spending on behalf of the membership, in a strict fiscal conservative manner. The majority of the other LU 46 E-Board members were also military veterans, that for the most part shared Steve's way of looking at things. When a good union Sister announced that she would be resigning from this E-Board, the remaining members were responsible for choosing her successor, which they fulfilled by selecting, Arthur Gabriel Sanchez. It was an honor serving the membership as an E-Board union official, along with the other great Americans who felt I was ready for the task.
One of my cherished memories of Brother Vondette, was when he looked over at me from behind the wheel of his classic Mercury Marquis, and asked, "do you know much about astronomy?" The expansive view looking west across the long hood of Vondette's automobile, was dark and starry along this stretch of eastbound Interstate 90, as we sped towards Seattle on our return trip from Spokane, where official International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) 9th District business had concluded earlier in the day.
I answered him in the affirmative, having seen the starriest of nights while growing up in Wyoming, than adding that I was somewhat lacking when it came to identifying many constellations, that were typically overwhelmed by the shear number of stars seen in the night skies above our nation's Rocky Mountain states. Vondette pulled over at the first opportunity, and proceeded to point at the three stars that form the Summer Triangle. A bit of favor was evident, along with his astonished surprise, at the defining clarity of the constellation Sagitta. The "arrow" Steve called it. "Straight Arrow" is what Steve would call other people he found to be trustworthy, regarding the well being of the union's membership. All in all, it was truly a time of uncompromising love for, Made in the United States of America.
