Imagine stepping into the minds of the earliest explorers who made first contact with the Indigenous people of the Pacific Northwest and relive what has been preserved in the historical record. 

"This is a supernatural place" is how Frank Bennett a local storyteller described this space to anthropologist Albert B. Reagan, an employee of the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs. 

TIMELINE 1700 - 1775

Looking west imagine no ocean, just seabed on the horizon being forced down, while behind us the Olympic Mountains to the east are being forced up.  The plate tectonics beneath this coastline is called the Cascadia Subduction Zone.  The Second Bucareli Exploration, recorded natural oddities along this coastline, that could be attributed with past activity along the Cascadia Subduction Zone.

SANTIAGO approach, Latitude N 47° 28' | July 13, 1775 12:00 (Beals, Honor & Country, by observation p. 122).

The Pacific Ocean horizon is interrupted by a remarkable island, first sighted on July 12, 1775.  

Please pause a moment and locate the key island on the western horizon, first called "Dolores" by the crewmembers of the schooner Sonora, a.k.a. Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.  Commander Hezeta would later official record this island's name, as La Isla de Los Dolores (translation, Island of Pains). 

Dolores at first the island time buoy associated with laborious pains at maintaining northerly gains,  would again be memorialized as a beacon for sorrows.  A new name Destruction Island, would recall the lost crewmembers of the Imperial Eagle who met their end at the matching Destruction River, we call today the Hoh River.

Mark Twain famously said, credited quote, "History doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme" | Hoh!

DESTRUCTION ISLAND: Captain George Vancouver described this island time buoy as being, "...by far the largest detached land yet observed on the coast."  (Meany - Vancouver's 'Original Journal' pages 38-39).  

Vancouver's statement "largest detached land" describing Destruction Island, was also an accurate measure of Isla de Los Dolores, that matched with the historical eyewitness accounts confirming the true location of Rada de Bucareli.  A book by Edmond S. Meany titled, Vancouver's Discovery of Puget Sound  states that on July 14, 1775,  the schooner Sonora did indeed "take shelter" in the author's words, near Destruction Island, while the frigate Santiago anchored a few miles south performed the official Act of Possession.   (Meany, Vancouver's Discovery, p. 65) 

OVERLOOK: Rada de Bucareli at Ruby Beach, Olympic National Park, is nature's lesson in duality, and trinity, expressed from different points of view.  Pope Francis taught God's elect, that pain, hope, and beauty, vividly express the individual situations all must experience in their lives.  A common view, seemingly captured in the history of this beautiful panorama.  Pain, hope, and beauty, are the three words, that balance the equation, for both sides in this first contact.  Look north and south and you will see that Rada de Bucareli is blessed with many wonders, including striking supernatural landmarks, like the King Mimetolith, and Los Frailes, Queen of Heaven Mimetolith.  [Zoom in More: Miracle Mimetolith Galleries.]

Before starting the short hike down to Ruby Beach, remain mindful of all advisories posted by Olympic National Park.  Weather, tidal, and beach conditions can change rapidly, as the crews of the Santiago and Sonora, discovered in 1775.  Your helmet will flash and sound a warning, should the park service issue a new alert in effect.

It's safe to presume that the first path leading down to the beach was near here, though past human activity in this immediate vicinity may have also contributed to several switchbacks and the sloping grade straight ahead.  As you begin turning back the pages of time, imagine enjoying a country breakfast at anyone of the guest cabins that once stood here.  The smell of eggs, bacon, and biscuits, will theoretically change at the next Window of Truth.
